Damian McCarthy has quietly become one of the most reliable names in indie horror, and Hokum is him leveling up — this time with Adam Scott in the lead, which is not a sentence I expected to type. Scott plays a horror writer who heads to a remote Irish inn to scatter his parents’ ashes, not realizing the place is supposedly haunted by a witch. That’s the whole hook, and McCarthy is a master at making a single creepy location feel absolutely airless. It hit theaters through Neon and the reviews have been strong. If you like your horror atmospheric, mean, and light on cheap jump scares, this is one to seek out.
