The TV series As You Stood By is a South Korean crime thriller that starts from a premise the genre knows well — two women in an abusive situation who decide to fight back — but the execution brings enough pressure and specificity to make it feel like its own thing. Jeon So-nee and Lee You-mi, both of whom have strong track records in Korean drama and film, play characters whose survival plan is upended by an unexpected arrival that resets the stakes entirely.
The series works in the compressed, high-tension register that Korean crime drama does particularly well, and the direction keeps the claustrophobia tight without letting it become airless.
